Hire a designer

A game designer for your team

I design games around the human needs they meet, because that's where fun comes from. I can lead your project's design on a monthly retainer, or deliver a complete design for a fixed price.

What I can do for you

Design lead on retainer

I own the design of your game: its core loop, systems, progression, metagame and content structure. I keep the vision consistent and turn feedback into decisions.

From €500 a month

Design review

I review an existing design or prototype: what needs it meets, what it's missing, and where it can grow. You get a written report with concrete changes, usually within one to four weeks.

From €400, quoted per project

A complete design

I write a full game design document, plus a showcase page like the ones on this site that pitches the game to players, team members and publishers.

From €1500, quoted per project

The writing

A book, Game Design Technology: The Holy Grail of Fun: 34 chapters on designing games around the human needs they meet, free to read online. Plus 18 long-form articles on need satisfiers, infinite metagames, multiplicative content and what a game designer really does.

How I work

  • Design comes firstI start from the human need a game meets and build the systems that meet it. I prefer infinite metagames to throwaway content, and multiplicative content to additive.
  • I direct production end to endI run the production of my own projects through Claude Code, covering code, tools, content pipelines and these very pages. A design from me comes from someone who knows what it costs to build.
  • A generalist behind the designerI make pixel art, 3D and voxel models, sound edits, promo art and video, writing, community work and publishing. When the team has a gap, I can usually fill it or brief whoever does.
  • I listen to feedback properlyI'm versed in Nonviolent Communication, so I read feedback for the need behind it, not just the words.

Pay

I don't bill by the hour. Design doesn't work in shifts: the best ideas arrive at any hour, and the work can't be switched on and off with a clock. So there are three ways to pay me.

Monthly retainer

The price follows the pressure. The more of my time, availability and own projects the work asks for, the more it costs.

Part-time€500–€1000A relaxed pace with no deadlines or pressure, alongside my own projects.
Design lead€1500Your game is my main work, on a steady schedule.
Priority leadup to €3000Tight deadlines and on-call availability, with my own projects fully on hold.

Fixed price

A set job for a set price, agreed before I start.

Design reviewfrom €400One to four weeks, depending on the project's size and how soon you need it.
Complete designfrom €1500A full design document and showcase page.

Revshare

We build one of my designs together and split what it earns. No money changes hands up front.
